Developing young NHL defensemen is often a lengthier process compared to forwards, given the intricacies of the position and the physical growth needed to handle the challenges on the ice.
In 2019, when the Ottawa Senators selected Lassi Thomson as the 19th overall pick, they believed they were adding a valuable piece to their defensive lineup. Scouts were particularly impressed by his powerful shot, adept skating, and puck-handling skills.
However, in the realm of player development, each prospect charts a unique path to the NHL. For Lassi Thomson, that path has taken an unexpected turn.
During the previous season, Thomson spent most of his time with the Belleville Senators, amassing 33 points in 56 games. While he did make a couple of appearances in the NHL, he failed to register any points and averaged just 10 minutes and 53 seconds of ice time.

Now, Ottawa has made the decision to place Thomson on waivers for assignment to the AHL. The move opens up the possibility of Thomson being claimed by a team in search of defensive depth.
It's worth noting that the Senators boast an impressive top-four defense lineup consisting of Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot, Jakob Chychrun, and Artyom Zub, which could easily contend for the best in the Atlantic division.
