Jagger Firkus has clearly outgrown the WHL, and the Seattle Kraken face a crucial decision: should he start the 2024-25 season in the NHL or with the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the AHL?

After an impressive season scoring 61 goals and 126 points in 63 games, leading to a WHL championship and earning both the WHL and CHL MVP titles, Firkus' junior hockey career has reached its pinnacle and it's time for him to move on.
Firkus, who was surprisingly omitted from Team Canada's World Junior roster, remained unfazed and continued to excel with the Moose Jaw Warriors. The 2022 second-round pick has blossomed into one of the top offensive prospects in the NHL and a key figure in the Kraken's future.
At 20 years old, having signed his entry-level contract in April 2023, Firkus is eligible to play in either the NHL or AHL next season.
The Kraken have multiple strategies to consider. One option is to start him in the AHL, allowing for gradual development and a potential mid-season call-up, similar to how the Dallas Stars handled Logan Stankoven, another former second-round pick and WHL MVP.
Alternatively, they could give Firkus a nine-game tryout in the NHL at the start of the season if he impresses during training camp and preseason. This approach allows the team to evaluate his readiness without immediately using a year of his entry-level contract. If he performs well, he could remain with the NHL squad; if not, he can be sent to the Firebirds without any contractual complications.
The Kraken have the advantage of Firkus not requiring waivers, but they must carefully balance what's best for his immediate contributions and long-term development.
Firkus is eager to prove he belongs in the NHL and can make a significant impact. His scoring prowess and playmaking abilities could address the Kraken's offensive needs, highlighted during the 2023-24 season. All he needs to do is continue demonstrating why he deserves this opportunity with the Kraken.
