Standing at 6'4", Saarinen has experience in the U-18 SM-sarja, U-20 SM-sarja, and Liiga, the top Finnish league. In the U-20 league, he posted a .917 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against average in 23 starts. He is expected to play more than two games with HPK in Liiga next season.
According to Eliteprospects, "Saarinen brings a unique combination of skill and size. He maintains excellent edge access and remains patient when the puck is passed around the zone, capable of making quick adjustments in either direction. He's also difficult to beat on clean shots due to his above-average tracking ability."
The Kraken have now made selections in each position group: three forwards, one defenseman, and one goaltender. Saarinen is the third Finnish goaltender the Kraken have selected in the last two drafts.
