New York Rangers fans had high hopes for former Kraken center Alex Wennberg as he was traded at the deadline to the Big Apple, and after a few weeks since being knocked out of the playoffs Wennberg has his sights on unrestricted free agency.
"It's been awesome. Obviously, disappointed with the ending, but time's been fine here. Coming to a good team, meeting new guys, being a part of the New York Rangers was amazing, really positive."
But even with that enjoyment heading to New York City and playing in front of Madison Square gardens, it appears that Wennberg is ready to choose his next city and to ensure that his family is happy wherever he may go.
"What's important for me is to pick what I think is right. Me and my wife are going to figure it out. My mindset and focus has been playing here for the Rangers. I feel like I'm still here until we see what happens."
Wennberg's stat line in New York certainly was not what he expected as through 19 games in the regular season, he only scored one goal with four assists for five points and plain 16 games in the playoffs he was only able to score one goal and one assist and was a – 2.
He is coming off his three-year $13.5 million deal that he signed with Seattle in 2021. With a $4.5 million cap hit and being 29 years old it remains to be seen on what he will get paid when he hits the open market.
It's likely he will not sign in New York as the Rangers are currently having cap trouble and will need to address several issues including there number one goaltender in Igor Shesterkin.
There are many teams looking for help at centre and he will certainly have his calls. It remains to be seen on whether Ron Francis may give his agent another call to see if he'd like to return to the Kraken.
