Debates Rise Over NHL Safety Regulations

The English Ice Hockey Association has announced that protective neckwear will be mandatory for all players starting in 2024.

This decision comes after the tragic passing of former NHL player Adam Johnson, who was cut in the neck with a skate on Saturday night.

Since Saturday night, there has been lots of debate surrounding whether or not professional hockey leagues should make neck guards mandatory for all players.

Players on the AHL's Providence Bruins wore neck guards for their game on Sunday night, making more people raise the question of it becoming mandatory for safety purposes.

There is an argument to be made that since the NHL has made it mandatory for players to wear visors and to wear a helmet during warmups, then players should have to wear protective gear on their necks to decrease the risk of a major incident occurring again.
